Bug Description

I saw that Ubuntu had an update for version 11.04 so I went to upgrade. I'm not sure what version I was using, I believe it was 10.10 but it now reads in the "about" as 11.04.

I guess I expected it to upgrade and be done.
instead, near the end of the upgrade process it ended with this failure. I'm not sure how or why, but now it says a recovery will now run (dpkg -configure -a) since "Your system could be in an unusable state" I doubt Samba would matter as far as putting the system in a unusable state, so this really is quite an inconvenience. I would rather it gave me an option to continue regardless, and forget samba ( I don't use it anyways) but now, it's going to recover and un-install the 11.04 because of a simple, silly little bug from Samba. Hmm.

Anyways. sorry I can't be of more assistance, I really don't know what went wrong. I don't know if this bug is a security vulnerability, I suppose it could be technically considered security vulnerability as it is not going to let me upgrade, thus leaving security holes in place, unable to be patched up. so I'm going to tick the security button to be safe.

Also, I don't know quite how all this bug reporting works. I noticed it says it's marked as private because I said it's a security vulnerability, perhaps if I had left it alone it would be open to public to get support from the community? Also, if you can tell me how to fix the issue that'd be wonderful.

Thanks again

uninstalling the samba4 package seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

security vulnerability: yes → no
visibility: private → public
