Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

When I install network-manager(-gnome) my system gets unusable,

It doesn't completely crash, but login-out makes it hang, running apps works, but running sudo ... also makes the process hang, other processes still work ok. Rebooting gives the same problems, some processes hang, log in at the console is possible but as soon as I run sudo... the console is locked. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL is detected, but also hangs...

Rebooting in recovery-mode makes me able to run sudo apt-get remove network-manager which solves the problems again.

here my log, if you need more info, please ask.

It looks more like a crash of the kernel driver for your wifi card...
I have just experienced a similar problem, I will test tomorow if removing network-manager solves it.
Uneducated guess: if it is "just" a driver problem, blacklisting r8187 should also solve the problem (I planned to do it but ran out of time). I will try blacklisting it and removing network-manager and comment back later.

I upgraded my laptop (Toshiba M200, with integrated wifi-card) to Feisty too, and this works without problems.

So big change that this error is due to the driver,
should I try to add rtl8187 (or r8187) to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist on my Desktop-computer to see if this solves the error?

Indeed, the log you posted looks like a driver problem:

Jan 31 13:39:05 leon-desktop kernel: [ 46.901348] rtl8187: Card successfully reset
Jan 31 13:39:10 leon-desktop kernel: [ 51.597988] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000

If blacklisting it solves the error, it will also allow you to keep the network-manager installed. AFAIR this is necessary to keep ubuntu-desktop installed, which makes administration/upgrades much easier :)
Anyway, I will test both here on friday (removing the network-manager then blacklisting and reinstalling it).

unloading the module

$ sudo modprobe -r r8187
Segmentation fault

already gives a segfault,

I have now blacklisted the module as well, but still have to reboot... Let you know if I can install network-manager after that.

I can confirm that blacklisting module r8187 fixes the error of the NetworkManager.

I rebooted, after adding r8187 to the blacklist, and installed network-manager(-gnome) and now I don't see any error and my system stays up as normal.

Of course I haven't got wireless now, but I didn't use if anyway on my desktop, so for me that isn't a very big problem for now.
