Is there a way to fix it in Ubuntu 6.10? Maybe using sudo in the menu? Other applications like Adept and Synaptic manage to get root.

Not easily.

The SRU process is described at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/SRU but typically takes 2-3 months to go through, by which time, feisty will be out.
