Message count should not be vissible in case there are no new messages (IMO).

No icon means that the app is not started. For example, when the user turns on the computer and sees "0" badge he knows that there's certainly no mail, otherwise there may be problems with connection, wrong settings, etc.

Ah, ok. "0" is just distracts me.
Btw, one chrome extension has gray icon while inactive and color one when connection is ok. Can unity change icons?

No, Unity can't change icons. But it's a good idea!

It will be possible in the next version (0.8.7).

To hide count with no new mail, open ~/.config/unity-mail.conf and under [General] section, paste this:
HideMessagesCount = True

If this file doesn't exist, change any option in confuguration dialog, this will create it. Then you can change it back.

I did it... but the icon is still in the panel despite there are no new messages.
