sounds like a problem in ark. /usr/bin/7z is accessible from the command line without any problem.

Affects me on Kubuntu12.04.

Would it be possible to workaround this issue by symlinking 7z to 7zr or is the syntax of 7zr different to the 7z syntax which ark expects?

Ok I found a workaround myself: Using the package p7zip-full instead of p7zip.

pzip7-full is now a recommends of the arch package ensuring it gets pulled in unless one explicitly tells the package manger not to.
