The problem can actually broken down to multiple aspects:
As described in the report, even if Thunderbird is added manually, it won't work. That I fixed by using feed:// URIs instead of http:// - a silly formalism, Liferea treats both the same.
Thunderbird has no News category in it, that's why it doesn't show up. That's a bug in Thunderbird in my opinion and should be reported to Mozilla.
Midori doesn't check the system-wide news aggregator. That'd be a separate feature request (and arguably a bug). I would appreciate you filing this with a suggestion on what you would expect it to work like.
