Unity not working on Oneiric Alpha amd64 (fglrx graphics)

Bug Description
I upgraded from Natty to Oneiric to test the early Alphas.
This worked for a while and then the Unity desktop stopped appearing and the desktop continually flickered.
I was able to get into a terminal to continue updating so the wifi connection was still being made.
A further update stopped the desktop from flickering but Unity was still not visible.
I then switched into a terminal (ctrl-alt-F1) to check if Unity was actually installed.
It was then installed and showed that many other components were no longer required. (see below)
I am in Gnome now and that is usable.
