Bug Description
The default session in lightdm is currently (0.9.3-0ubuntu1) unset. This means that unless the user switches to a different session, they won't actually be able to login. This is exacerbated by bug 818201 which means the switch isn't remembered.
The problem is with the Ubuntu packaging, which sets the default session to 'gnome' (which is now a hidden session) instead of the new 'ubuntu' session.

Doh, I'm an idiot. Didier already fixed this:
lightdm (0.9.3-0ubuntu2) oneiric; urgency=low
* Backport mterry's changes to the gdmflexiserver functionnality lightdm. install: install the new files
* debian/control: default to the unity greeter (lp: #809710)
* debian/
[ Didier Roche ] set-defaults enables tweaking the default session and chosen
* Cherry-pick from upstream:
- lightdm-
greeter for lightdm. This is useful for derivatives waiting to not ship
the whole configuration file of lightdm
- refreshed translations
* debian/rules:
- set "ubuntu" as the default session (unable to login for people who don't
have a .dmrc, sorry for the kittens…)
