And most likely this is the same bug as https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pouetchess/+bug/63309? Do you agree?
In that case there is already a fixed version in edgy proposed repository.

The latest version I see is the one I installed before, "0.2.0-0ubuntu1". Which repository is it loaded to?

This version is in the 'edgy-updates' component. You should have these lines in your /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy-updates main restricted universe multiverse

I already had these entries to my sources.list, but I didn't see this version yesterday. The good news is now see it and it's installed.

I played a quick game and it ran perfectly. I will try again and report back in a few days. It looks very nice.
