I'm dual booting an hp pavillion media centre pc with ubuntu 11.04 and ubuntu 10.10 and xp media centre edition. I get no sound in either version of ubuntu, but the sound works perfectly in xp

Ah, I see. Work in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/166583 led to a fix for the problem, suggesting that it is not a bug.
