Bug Description

In the time-admin tool there is a feature for setting up synchronization of time
with NTP servers but when I try to enable it, it complains that my system
doesn't have support for NTP. I'm guessing the problem is that ntpd is not
installed.

It would be nice if ntpd was available in the Ubuntu archives, and possible even
installed by default.

We made an explicit decision not to install ntpd by default, in order to have no
network services listening in the desktop install. Ideally, it would be
installed but inactive, and the time configuration tool would enable it. This
is Hoary material, though.

Oh, I see. Seems smart. But at the moment ntpd isn't available at all in the
archives. Could that be remedied for a start then?

Have you tried to install ntp-refclock (it's in universe) ?

It is available and supported; it just has the rather unexpected name "ntp-simple".

It seems to work after installing ntp-refclock (installing ntp-simple didn't
solve the problem). Thanks a bunch guys.

ntp-refclock is for when you have a reference clock attached to your computer
and wish for it to become an authoritative time source. ntp-simple is more than
sufficient for when you just want to sync your time with a network time source.

What went wrong when you used ntp-simple? That is the correct solution here

ntp-simple works indeed, but I found a different bug in the process.

When ntpd is installed and time-admin is started, the sync time checkbox is
automatically selected on startup. However, if I then untick and retick the box,
the same dialog box appears telling me my system doesn't support NTP.
