Bug Description

When I open Abiword and a one page document I can print it once, but after that if I try to print using Abiword, I get this message in http://localhost:631/printers/ under "hp_par_DESKJET_670C (Default Printer)": "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed". If I restart Abiword, I can print again, once.

I have installed HP Deskjet 670C printer by CUPS' web interface.
(Make and Model: HP DeskJet 670C Foomatic/hpijs (recommended) - HPLIP 0.9.7)

I am using Ubuntu lite on Ubuntu server 6.06.1
Abiword version is 2.4.4

(Printing a pdf file using lpr command on terminal works fine even if repeated.)

Could you try some other app like the GNOME Editor gedit to reproduce this?

lpr is not exactly a good candidate since it exits after printing :-)

Thank you.

At least I could print from Firefox several times without restarting Firefox. (I tried mousepad, too, but only got an error: Can't open pipe to process.)

(I am also unable to print by Katoob, but that is not installed by default in Ubuntu lite.)

I can confirm this bug in Xubuntu 6.10 with AbiWord 2.4.5.
I can print multiple times from gedit and Firefox, but only once each time I open AbiWd - even with the same document. To get a second print from AbiWd I have to close and re-open AbiWd, not just the document.

PS Jarno: you will probably need to install the package a2ps to allow printing via Xfprint eg: from mousepad per Launchpad bug 41271.

I can confirm this bug in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy-beta). I then tried Kword and found that there was no such problem - it could print again and again without problems. This definitely seems to be an Abiword-only issue.

Thank you for your bug report. Do you still have this issue with an updated Ubuntu ?

Yes, indeed I do. I have the latest Ubuntu 7.10 with all the most current patches applied, but the problem has persisted.

I can print many times by Abiword in ubuntu 7.10. I am using different printer and driver, though; see bug #163148.

My printer is a HP Photosmart 7800, and the problem still exists even with the latest Ubuntu 7.10.

I confirm this on my machine as well. Highly annoying given the fact that Abiword is such a fantastic program! Hope someone can pin this problem down and fix it soon. I use Ubuntu 7.04 and the Abiword version from the repos, i.e ver 2.4.6. I have an HP PSC 1500. Printing in other programs works flawlessly.

The problem appears to be fixed after I updated Ubuntu 7.10 with the latest patches.

This problem occurs in XUbuntu 7.10, up-to-date with repos as of 24 March 2008.

My wife reported the problem to me. Restarting the computer causes the print job to start.

/var/logs/cups/error_log as the following:

If there is more that I can add, let me know.

Correction. I said "Restarting the computer causes the print job to start.", which is false. I thought my wife said that after logging back in after a reboot, the print job automatically restarted. Actually, after restarting the computer, she could reopen Abiword and print. I have confirmed that a reboot is not necessary - just exiting and restarting Abiword is sufficient.

Thanks for helping improve Ubuntu/Xubuntu. Is this still an issue in the latest releases, Hardy 8.04 or Intrepid 8.10?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 with Abiword version 2.6.4-4ubuntu4 .
