Bug Description

i am one of the upstream maintainers. we have released a new stable version on 2011-07-26 (http://www.flashrom.org/Flashrom/0.9.4). our Debian maintainer has prepared a new package, which is now in unstable (or on the way there).
please sync!

a backport for LTS might also be a good idea, because there are many bugs fixed since the (very old) version in LTS that could brick the user's PC completely. dunno if that qualifies for a backport though.

For bug fixes you should cherry-pick the fixes from your release and follow the SRU process [1]. Backports are not designed for bug fixes, but for new upstream release that introduce new features.

thanks for the ack!

regarding the SRU: sorry for using the wrong term. the problem is that there is no single patch/commit that could be ported and we don't have the resources to look at 400 commits to find all corner cases and port them. maybe it would be easier to just remove the package from lucid completely. is that possible? flashrom is exceptional because it can be really, really dangerous, more than about any other package in ubuntu (permanent hardware error...). so please think about a solution for this :)

If removing the package is the alternative, then get the complete new version through the SRU process is better. Regarding the SRU process: The version in one release must be lower that the version in the next release. Therefore if you want 0.9.4+r1394 in lucid, you also have to port it to maverick and natty.
