Bug Description

The summary says it all. I insert the disc into my MacBook Pro, reboot, hold down the C key. It loads up the ISO loader screen. I select "Install Ubuntu", the screen goes black and remains that way.

Please let me know if there is any more information I can give.

More likely to be an issue with the bootloader or kernel rather than with plymouth, I think. Reassigning to syslinux for further triaging.

Have the same problem on my MacBook Pro with Ubuntu 11.10.

The "Ubuntu Welcome Jingle" was played successfully after Ubuntu booted up from LiveCD, but the screen remained blank. A wild guess would be that simply the right display was not configured correctly (by the way it has Sandy Bridge CPU with an external AMD Radeon GPU).

In the Grub boot-loader I removed "quite" and "splash" kernel boot options. And this was the last error message I saw before screen froze: fb: conflicting fb hw usage radeondrmfb vs EFI VGA - removing generic driver

If I add "nomodeset" to the kernel boot options then I am able to get past that error message and atleast have access to command line. If I do xstart then then it complained with "Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration."

By the way I have MacBookPro 8,2 with external AMD graphics card.

It seems that this bug is exposed only when Ubuntu LiveCD is loaded from USB flash drive. I was able to boot Ubuntu 12.04 from DVD disc without any problem.s

A MacBookPro 2011.

I installed from USB external cd Ubuntu Server 12.10 and then tried to update via apt-get install ubuntu-server.

From the live CD I too got through to the drum roll, but nothing displayed.

Looks like there are two problems one in USB driver the other in EFI stuff (I installed rEFIt first).

I hope this gives some information to a problem which is being experienced by a few people.

(my optical drive has been swapped for an SSD, hence external USB)
