Bug Description

Hi,

I have a Lenovo X220. I've noticed that from time to time Impress would freeze X11. By that I mean I can still move the mouse but everything else (including the keyboard) is frozen. A reliable way to trigger the bug is:

1) make sure that "antialiasing" is turned on in "Options->View" (you might want to restart, I don't know if this setting change applies on the fly)
2) Create an empty file
3) Drag and drop an image into the slide
4) Select with the mouse and "shake it" (move it around the screen) as fast as you can for maybe 5-10 seconds
5) Crash!

This happens every time in the Lenovo X220 (running compiz). I am attaching the Xorg.0.log containing a backtrace, which I got by sshing into the frozen machine: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/816075/+attachment/2231837/+files/Xcrash.log

This backtrace was obtained using Natty:

a) driver module prominent in the backtrace b) reported explicitly against compiz c) not reproducable on nvidia here => most likely an X11 driver issue. Closing for Libreoffice.

FWIW there is a thread that points to this bug here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1753948

Quite a few Lenovo users reporting the problem. I have the problem with a Lenovo X1, but with Calc, not Impress. Presume it's still the same though.

Hi,
as far as I can guess this, this is not a Lenovo issue, but a problem of the implementation of the graphic drivers. (i am SM666AT in the above mentioned ubuntuforum-thread) My PC is a HP Elitebook and uses the "Intel(R) Sandybridge" drivers, that are also used in the Lenovos. And as soon as I turn of anti-aliasing in Libreoffice, I experience no more freezes ...

thanx,
SM

Ah, I forgot: I experienced problems in Writer and Calc, just tried to copy and paste things around and soon got stuck. (only Magic SysRq Keys unfreezed the system!!!)

Carlos Moffat, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. WIth the Lenovo X220, please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-cli -u 816075 -p xserver-xorg-video-intel

Please execute the following command and attach the file to this bug report:
lspci -vvnn > 'lspci -vvnn.txt'

Please attach the information requested from: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze
Regarding this problem happening with your nvidia based computer, please file a separate report against it's driver.

To clarify, in LibreOffice 3.3.4, in the Options menu, under View, should I have:

* "Graphics Output" -> "Antialiasing" turned OFF
* "User Interface" -> "Screen font antialiasing" turned ON (from 1 pixels)

Is that correct?

Running on a Thinkpad X1 (sandybridge) I was experiencing random crashes of libreoffice (impress and writer) until I disabled the antialiasing after which I have not experienced a single crash. To verify this was the cause I turned antialiasing back on and sure enough the problem returned.

I updated to 11.10 and Unity-2D and LibreOffice crashes have ceased. Still have the antialiasing option turned off, so that could also have been the fix.

Christopher.

yes, I apologize for the delay. I had kind of forgotten about this bug as I turned off antialiasing in LibreOffice impress and that reduced the freezes to very rare ocations. But having AA off creates its own display problems with non-trivial presentations, so I turned it back on a few days ago, just to have LO freeze up very soon thereafter.

I've now attached the info you requested.

With more and more Sandy Bridge laptops being released I think this counts as high priority.
