This only happens if compiz is used. ubuntu 2d works fine!

Have you tried to reproduce this issue not using the propietary controller? Please could you check if this behaviour continues with the free/radeon controller instead? Thank you

the radeon module doesn´t work the screen just stays black.. but i have the same issue with fglrx right now.. maybe this is another deeper problem in my system configuration.. i will try to reinstall my ubuntu, because i have updated from 10.04 up to oneiric and changed many things by hand.. which may have messed up /etc/alternatives...

I could not replicate this bug. I followed the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion. I Tried the following: (1) Keyboard shortcut Alt-F2. (2) Enter the command 'compiz --replace'. (3) Wait. The window manager updated without problem. Tried 'gtk-window-decorator --replace' from within a terminal; successfully.

More details of your setup are required.

I can reproduce the same issue on Ubuntu 11.10 in VirtualBox using the provided virtualbox-guest-system driver (virtualbox-guest-dkms, virtualbox-guest-x11, virtualbox-guest-utils version: 4.1.0-dfsg-2ubuntu1) .

Unity2D works fine. Gnome 3 and Unity 3D show the same behavior.

The issue should be due to a missing fglrx workaround that had been dropped. It's been fixed as of 1:0.9.5.92+bzr2791-0ubuntu1

Can you confirm whether the problem still occurs or not with this version.

Hello David Barth,

I can still reproduce the problem with compiz version: 1:0.9.5.92+bzr2791-0ubuntu1 in virtualbox.

@Alberto,

sorry for taking my time, but I had to install Oneiric on a SD-card due to a lack of other test devices (I usually do everything in virtualbox).
I do not have any screen corruption on my laptop using a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series with the fglrx driver.

Thanks for the feedback.

It shows that the vbox bridge is creating an issue with fglrx. I think we can only document the issue for now, until someone has time to look into the vbox driver.

@Alberto: can you open a task with the right driver ID in Launchpad? Thanks
