Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2, adding the brightness applet, hover over it I see the tooltip message "Cannot get laptop panel brightness".

The brightness soft buttons (Fn+Up, Fn+Down) work fine.

Any further info I can provide?

I have the same problem on lifebook p7010. Perhaps there should be a separate bugreport for each model? How's this progressing anyway?

I get the result described in this bug in Intrepid 8.10 (used to work in 8.04). I am not quite sure if the issue I am experiencing is the same as the one described in bug #43572. Changing the slider in the applet actually does set the screen brightness correctly, but the applet fails to show the percentage (displaying "Cannot get laptop panel brightness") for any level below 100%. Hardware is a Dell Inspiron 1720.

I ditto Sandro Mani's comment; I can still adjust brightness via the slider or the keys (just as I could in 8.04), but now I see "Cannot get laptop panel brightness" when hovering over the brightness applet since upgrading to 8.10 yesterday.

This is with two kernels (vanilla): 2.26.7 and 2.27.4 .

Same problem as in the previous two comments. Brightness applet still works to adjust brightness (as it did in 8.04) but now (after installing 8.10) does not show the brightness percentage when hovered over - instead displaying "cannot get laptop panel brightness".

(Straight after login, the applet shows the correct brightness of 100% but as soon as the slider is adjusted the problem presents itself.)

This does not seem to be a duplicate of #43572. The problem did not exist until 8.10 was installed and also, in this case, is affecting a Sony VGN-FS315M laptop not a Dell.

I'm having the same problem after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid. The brightness applet used to display correct info, now it shows 40% after logon and then when I change it it shows the above message on the tooltip. Also, after logon, the display is very bright, I believe it's 100%. On Hardy it used to be the last setting from the previous session. The applet can still change the brightness, it just doesn't display it correctly. The laptop model is Acer Aspire 5101 ANWLMi, so it's not a Dell. I'm not sure if this is a duplicate.

Can confirm that this is also a problem on a Gateway MX6440 laptop. Running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid, so it's still a problem after at least two major releases.
