This is obviously a bug in bash.

if I understand you correctly, the behaviour is not reproducible the
second time you run the init script. you should have a workaround by
using another shell, therefore the reduced severity.

and last, please add a bit more information to the report: the bash
version used, bash -x output, maybe a stacktrace.

Subject: vpopmail-bin: An error occurs immediately after `apt-get install
 vpopmail-bin'.

Package: vpopmail-bin
Version: 5.4.4-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The follow error occours immediately aftrer `apt-get install vpopmail-bin'.

  Setting up vpopmail-bin (5.4.4-1) ...
/etc/init.d/vpopmail: xmalloc: ../bash/parse.y:2584: cannot allocate 64 bytes (0 bytes allocated)
invoke-rc.d: initscript vpopmail, action "start" failed.

However, `apt-get remove vpopmail-bin' is once carried out and the error does not occur from `apt-get install vpopmail' after the 2nd next times.

we don't have qmail, bash-3.0 (although it's not entirely clear, that bash-3.0
is involved), but at least the vpopmail version points to unstable.
