Bug Description

Using herd 2 on a P4 2.8Ghz processor (HT) and IDE drive, the boot process stalls when "starting kernel event manager" is displayed. It remains frozen for ~5 minutes, then continues to boot normally. Never had this problem with Dapper or Edgy.

Hi,

Before you hit enter on your boot option in grub edit the boot line.

You need to remove "-quiet" and "-splash" before booting and then note down where its stopping.

That's embarrassing... for some reason I thought just removing "quiet" gave me all the messages. Looks like there's a more defined problem, anyway.

Here's where it hangs:

Workaround found by adding hdg=noprobe. I believe hdg might be the SATA drive containing windows. Without the hdg=noprobe, I cannot get any information from this drive at all - gparted hangs while trying to list devices, and fdisk -l /dev/hdg just blinks a cursor at me. Perhaps this is not a bug at all, or at least it is specific to my hardware.

I've the same problem, but the HD on /dev/hdg is a SATA one with this controller:
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801EB (ICH5) SATA Controller (rev 02)

In that HD I've only linux partitions.

This is a big problem: I can't install feisty (herd3 and herd4) on my HD!!!!!

I guess noprobe isn't an option for you, eh? I think this is definitely a bug. I just got my sata hard drive recently and feisty is happy to live on the ide, but I can't see the sata drive at all. I'm assuming this was not a problem in edgy or dapper then?

Seems to work now with boot option "irqpoll"

if irqpoll doesn't work for others, turn back on the RAID in your bios. and set up your disks as not in an array. This worked for me.

I'm encountering the problem after installing the 2.6.20-16 kernel. I'm able to boot into the 2.6.20-15 kernel though.

The funny thing is that I carried out a fresh install, installed the updates and the problem cropped up again. This also happened in my kubuntu installation.

I can confirm that 2.6.20-15 still works; 2.6.20-16 only is bootable with the irqpoll kernel parameter.

2.6.20-16.29 fixed the problem - at least in my case.
