Bug Description

After running do-release-upgrade I get the following error:

Getting upgrade prerequisites failed

The system was unable to get the prerequisites for the upgrade. The
upgrade will abort now and restore the original system state.

Please report this as a bug against the 'update-manager' package and
include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

It seems as though the URL in his file is wrong: http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/meta-release-lts

Is this dapper server or dapper desktop? dapper desktop is no longer supported.

Dapper server... which is also no longer supported. Guess I have to reinstall then?

I believe that's the only option for those who manage to end up on an unsupported upgrade path.

I have the same problem going from 6.06 to 8.04 LTS. Like the OP, my log shows release-upgrader adding:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-backports main/debian-installer

to:

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-sources.dapper.list

which causes a subsequent 404 server error as it tries to fetch:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/dapper-backports/main/debian-installer/binary-i386/Packages.gz

which does not exist since dapper files have been moved from the archive sub domain to the old-releases sub domain. I think the file it is looking for is at:

http://old-release.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/dapper-backports/main/debian-installer/binary-i386/Packages.gz

If it is getting this outdated information from http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/meta-release-lts as the OP suggested, can't someone just update that page to reflect the new file location? If it is not getting it from there, can you please tell me where is is getting it from so I can manually correct it? Thanks!

When you say dapper desktop is no longer supported... does this mean there is no way to update a dapper desktop system??

I would agree with mr. john kelly. there's got to be a way to update the prerequisite urls... possibly a cmd line arg....
