SDCARD mounts read only. Cannot add/delete even as SU

It mounts fine (sometimes I have to pop it out and put it back in but no big deal). I see my files, but I can't delete or add anything to them. When I try to change the permissions in the menu it doesn't effect my ability to modify the files. I am using a Dell inspiron 1420. It is a MICRO SD in a SD CARD adapter that plugs into the laptops built in SD slot.

IT IS NOT THE WRITE PROTECTION LEVER. I've read some people say that the lever gets adjusted when inserted. That is not the case as here. I found a way to mount it manually with some special flags to get this to work, it was a bit of a pain and I forgot how to do it, but it can be over written with some clever bash which isn't what I want to do (why you think I'm using Ubuntu and not Gentoo ! lol).

I have just started seeing this or a simlar problem on Ubuntu 14.04. Syslog shows that the device has been detected corrected as not being write protected.

However /proc/mounts shows that the /dev/sdb1 has been mounted 'ro'. parted reports that the host device /dev/sdb is read only.
