When I start a Unity 3D session (the "Ubuntu" session), no UI loads except the nautilus desktop

Bug Description
I hear the startup sound, and my background loads. I can access the right-click menu of the nautilus desktop. I get libnotify notifications too. But that's it - there's no menubar or launcher.
I've tried "unity --reset", but it doesn't help.
