Thanks for your report. It appears that your volume is turned down below 50% or muted entirely. Please check that the volume level is set to a reasonable amount. You can do so by clicking the speaker icon in the top right hand corner of your screen, and adjusting the volume control found in the drop-down menu. Also check that you have the rigt output connector selected. From the same drop-down menu, choose "Sound Preferences...". Once a new window opens, go to the "Output" tab, and choose the appropriate connector from the "Connector" drop-down box.

If none of the above helps, you can try updating the audio drivers, as explained here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules.

Please keep us informed.

Luke, thanks for your help. I've already turned up the volume level and it didn't work. I also selected the "earphone connector", as you suggested, but it didn't work either. Besides, when I selected "earphone connector", it comes no sound from the speakers, so I changed back to "analog output".

Finally, I updated the audio drivers and it didn't work as well.

My motherboard is a Biostar G41D3C. The one I was using before was a MSI (don't remember the model), and the sound was perfect, both on Ubuntu and on Windows XP. I have also looked for a proprietary drive on Biostar's website , but it does not support Linux, so I'm thinking of going back to MSI.

Thank you!

This is my motherboard. I have a very similar problem. Sound does not work at all on the front input. It works in Windows 7, so it is not a hardware fault. The sound chip is:

VIA VT2021 codec
High Definition Audio
2/4/5.1/7.1-channel
Support for S/PDIF Out

on this motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-H77-D3H Motherboard, Socket 1155, Intel H77, 4xDDR3, 2xPCIe-16, 3xPCIe-1, VGA, DVI, HDMI, RAID, ATX
