Bug Description

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

When clicking on "Enable" in the desktop-effects settings dialog, I get this in command line:

compiz.real: No stencil buffer. Clipping of transformed windows is not going to be correct when screen is transformed.
compiz.real: Couldn't load plugin '--use-cow'

Looks like a wrong command line when starting compiz?

I don't know if it's related but...
Also in Feisty up-to-date, running in Vmware: clicking "Enable Desktop Effects" crashes X.

Doesn't happen for me anymore with feisty herd-3. Can anybody confirm this?

I don't have that message now, but have this other:

emilio@kiko:~$ desktop-effects
gtk-window-decorator: Could not acquire decoration manager selection on screen 0 display ":0.0"
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b
compiz.real: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not supported by direct rendering context, trying indirect rendering context instead
compiz.real: No stencil buffer. Clipping of transformed windows is not going to be correct when screen is transformed.
inotify_add_watch: No such file or directory

me too... when running desktop-effects and clicking the enable button, I get:

$ desktop-effects

compiz.real: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not supported by direct rendering context, trying indirect rendering context instead
compiz.real: No stencil buffer. Clipping of transformed windows is not going to be correct when screen is transformed.
inotify_add_watch: No such file or directory

it appears compiz starts somewhat (dragging the desktop-effects window shows it is wobbly) but there's no window shows up to confirm that I want to keep the settings, and the window manager is switched back to metacity after 30 seconds or so.

this is on a Thinkpad x60s with Intel 945 graphics.

I think this is not a desktop-effects issue, because enabling compiz directly from the command line has the same issue.

emilio@kiko:~$ compiz.real --replace
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b
compiz.real: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not supported by direct rendering context, trying indirect rendering context instead
compiz.real: No stencil buffer. Clipping of transformed windows is not going to be correct when screen is transformed.
Terminated
emilio@kiko:~$

I think the problem is with the video drivers. In my case, I have an intel gma 915, with the i810 driver (feisty up-to-date).

emilio@kiko:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes

I'm changing the package to compiz, but correct it if I'm wrong.

Still the same problem for me:

milio@kiko:~$ desktop-effects
GTK Accessibility Module initialized
GTK Accessibility Module initialized
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b
/usr/bin/compiz.real: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not supported by direct rendering context, trying indirect rendering context instead
/usr/bin/compiz.real: No stencil buffer. Clipping of transformed windows is not going to be correct when screen is transformed.
inotify_add_watch: No such file or directory
Window manager warning: "" found in configuration database is not a valid value for keybinding "toggle_shaded"
GTK Accessibility Module initialized
emilio@kiko:~$

However, I think this is not compiz-related, because if I do a glxinfo, I get that of:
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x5b

What do you think?

I would tend to think it's not just the video drivers, since it's not working on my Radeon X800, but the same configuration is working out-of-the-box for desktop effects if I boot from a Fedora 7 test2 live-CD (I tested it for another bug report).

Compiz should really be able to work on all Intel graphics, ATI Radeons 7000 - X850 using open source drivers and maybe even some others.

Does adding Option "XAANoOffscrenPixmaps" "true" to your xorg.conf (Device or Screen, can't remember which) fix this?

I ran into this issue and I solved it by removing existing xserver-driver-xorg (which caused DRI fail to load) and removing fglrx kernel module from running kernel (which seemed to prevent GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap from loading).

I had this problem with my new feisty beta installation. Beryl also did not performed correctly. Adding Option "XAANoOffscrenPixmaps" "true" to your xorg.conf to the device section worked and now desktop effects perform as well as you can expect with the oss ati drivers.

I'd like to confirm this problem also, with a new feisty beta installation. Adding "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" to xorg.conf fixed my problem as well.

Using oss ati drivers on an ati radeon igp.
