Bug Description

Hi,

When ever a avi or flash movie is being inserted on Libre Office, Impress does not recognize them when choosing to insert. Also, If choosing all files and inserting either a AVI or SWF format file, it won't play.

Please let me know if you need any other information.

Thanks!

Regards,

Ven

Attached is an AVI video that was not recognised when inserting a video on Impress. Strange thing is, Impress does not recognise any video format even All movie and sound files is selected.

If you need the SWF format, please let me know.

Thanks!

Ven

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu and LibreOffice better.

It seems your attachment is missing the .avi extension which may explain why the file does not appear in LibreOffice's choices when trying to import it.

Once renamed I was able to see it from the file choices, insert it, and have it play when in presentation mode. Please not videos inserted like this only show up in presentation mode (pressing F5).

If the file still does not play your system may be lacking proper video codecs/support. While making sure the file has the proper extension (.avi in this case), use the file manager (Nautilus) and double-click on it. Ubuntu should propose any missing packages/codecs required to play it. Once the file plays OK in your system it should also play within the presentation mode in LibreOffice.

Finally, to work around such bugs in the future, you may want to convert such files to an open format supported by default in Ubuntu. Ogg Theora has worked for me in the past. To convert such a file you can use oggconvert (graphical interface) or ffmpeg2theora (command line). Such files will play fin on any Gnu/Linux system running LibreOffice. I'd advise testing beforehand if you use LibreOffice in Mac OSX or Windows, if such systems are part of your target audience/usage (for example when distributing source for your presentations).

Regarding FLV files most of my comments still apply, however I'd encourage you to open a new, separate bug report for such problem.

Thanks Fabian! I already see your point, I though when VLC is installed, the codec is also included. Which is my mistake. :)
Sorry about misfiling this question into the bug section. First time to use this portal. :)

With regards to SWF, I'll just file another case on the bug section and upload a sample SWF file.

Again many thanks!

Ven
