Bug Description

After opening the GNOME Control Center, click on Login Window Preferences. It asks for the password, and after the password is entered the mouse spins like it's loading. After it stops spinning, nothing loads though.

Version: Ubuntu 6.10 and 7.04 (Herd 2)
Kernel: 2.6.17-10-generic
Package: gdm 2.16.1-0ubuntu4 (Edgy)

I can reproduce this on Feisty *and* on Edgy, x86.

The application called by Gnome Control Panel for Login Window preferences is gdmsetup .

Under Edgy I get this when I try to invoke gdmsetup from command line:

magicfab@suzy:~$ sudo gdmsetup
Password:
Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 2 of 5.
Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 3 of 5.
Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 4 of 5.
Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 5 of 5.
  Command failed 5 times, aborting.
Could not access GDM configuration file.

Can you tell me if you are using a Feisty Herd 2 recently updated system ? Can you post the result of invoking gdmsetup from the commandline on your system ?

Forgot to mention the output I get is exactly the same under Feisty Herd 2.

Found a report of this problem dating back Oct. 2006 in Gnome's forums:

Yep, I'm using Feisty Herd 2, just installed 2 days ago, all the updates (with the exception of the Beryl ones that keep breaking and refusing to install each other based on wanting Python 2.4) are installed.

I get no output when I try to run it from the CLI. The cursor in the terminal just keeps blinking. I tried with gksu, after switching into sudo -s, and with "sudo gdmsetup" thinking maybe gksu was hanging or something, but no luck. No errors are output, it just doesn't do anything.
