Bug Description

Asus A9RP comes with a version of the USB ZyDAS ZD1211 802.11b/g built in. IT is possible to make it work on the edgy kernel by following the instructions on http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=649014 (IN French- Translation: http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.ubuntu-fr.org%2Fviewtopic.php%3Fpid%3D649014&langpair=fr%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8) In edgy I also had to blacklist the 1211rw driver that is supported.

The developers of the driver http://zd1211.ath.cx/ claims that it should be supported in the kernel from 2.6.18, but so far none of the kernels has worked for me. I tried both the herd2 disk as well as a fully updated feisty (18th of jan. 07) but no luck. The wireless is not recognised. On the page http://zd1211.ath.cx/wiki/UntestedWithRewrite they describe the steps to activate support for the interface in this laptop.

Really love ubuntu!

Is this a dupe of bug 72767?

Hi

I'm sorry I have not updated that bug report... It still doesn't work because the zd1211rw team had not had any confirmation that it worked on this particular variety of the zd1211 wireless card. Now however - since I managed to confirm that it works, the a9rp version will be supported by the kernels starting from 2.6.22. Doesn't help much for me and feisty at the moment though... To support it anyway it is just to add the line

{ USB_DEVICE(0x0b05, 0x171b), .driver_info = DEVICE_ZD1211B } to the list of supported devices when compiling the kernel. Would be great to have it working since at the moment the driver doesn't compile cleanly on my feisty system forcing me to stick with edgy.

Best regards
Ketil

Hi,

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. If the issue still exists, please add the Hardy kernel "linux" task to the bug report. This can be done by clicking on the "Also affects distribution" link in the Actions area on left hand side of the bug report. Select "Ubuntu" as the Distribution and type in "linux" for the Source Package Name. Thanks.

Hi,
I've tried 8.10 alpha, but wireless is still not working.

Output of lsusb is:
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Should I see the wireless device there?

Cheers,
H.

That is weird as it has been working since Hardy on my asus A9RP at least. Is this on a live build cd?

I firstly installed 8.04 from live CD where it also did not work (lsusb on live CD with the same result). Then I found this article and upgraded to 8.10 alpha using Synaptic.

This is really strange! I suppose it is working in windows. Some times it takes a modprobe to get it working, but you seem to have tried that allready. But if you haven't try "sudo modprobe zd1211rw" in a terminal.

Good luck

Result of lsusb after "sudo modprobe zd1211rw" is still the same.
I'm not sure about the status in windows, because it is a laptop of my friend who asked me to install linux there and I've received it without OS. Nevertheless she told me that it worked.
I hope there is no hardware switch to turn wireless on but Fn+F2...
