From http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Alsa-sound-6.html

"The /proc/asound/ virtual directory shows lots of other information about the driver. Please note that /proc/asound/ will only exist after you inserted the first ALSA module. If there is no /proc/asound, it simply means that the "snd" module was not loaded properly."

I am not sure what it is that I should do. I downloaded and ran the alsa-info.sh script and have attached it. I have spent many hours looking for a solution to this problem. I have found many other queries about this same problem but have found no solutions other that the one mentioned at http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Vendor-Creative_Labs for the Sound Blaster 5.1 VX ca0106.

Thank You

I reloaded 10.04 yesterday after making the initial bug report. All the things I tried eventually messed up the system.
The alsa-info.txt upload was made after the system was reloaded. The problem is still very loud White noise when booting to Ubuntu 10.04 from a power off state. If windows is booted first, followed by a warm boot to Ubuntu 10.04 then the sound works perfectly.

Thank You

@Mike Thurston: Would you file a separate bug report, please? I'm not sure you're experiencing the same symptom as the original reporter.

I replied to the wrong bug. I did file a bug report # 804051. I will upload the alsa-info to that ticket.
