Bug Description

In Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 the panorama preview window fails to draw the panorama preview properly when using proprietary ATI driver with Radeon HD5650 card and Kernel 2.6.32-32 (Latest). Bug affects only the preview region of the preview window which either fails to draw the panorama or flickers while dragging the panorama. Bug could not be repeated on different machine with

Intel Corporation Mobile GME965/GLE960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

When the proprietary ATI driver was removed and no 3D acceleration was enabled the preview worked correctly but albeit slowly.

I could not test with open source ATI driver since I was unable to enable 3D acceleration with open source driver for some reason. (I did purge and re-install the drivers multiple times accodring to Ubuntu wiki.)

For more information please see the not so good video of the behaviour of the graphics window.

Thank you for reporting. What version of the ATI proprietary drivers were you using?

Hi

Sorry for the late reply. It is holiday season and I have been away.

Here is the screen shot from info page from Catalyst control center.

If some info is missing please tell me.

thanks for the driver info. where did you get 2011.0 for your Lucid box from? would you be available to run a few tests and answer the following questions?

1. does Hugin 2009.2.0 as shipped with Lucid originally work with the ATI proprietary drivers? http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/hugin

2. does Hugin 2010.4.0 work with the ATI proprietary drivers? you might have to build this one from source yourself. the instructions are at http://wiki.panotools.org/wiki/index.php?title=Hugin_Compiling_Ubuntu - just switch from the default branch to the 2010.4 with `hg up -c 2010.4` before switching to the build folder and starting CMake.

There are strong indications that there is at least one bug in the fast preview, and the above tests are designed to determine if this is a driver issue, a bug, or a combination of the two.

Please set the status of this report back to New to attract attention (hit the yellow round button next to the current status) once you have news to report.

Thank you for the time you are spending on this.

No problem. I get to it but it will take a few days since I may need to find time for compiling etc. stuff. I revert if I can not do some items.

1. I need to get/compile the later 2009.2.0 version and test.

2. I have not had any issues with 2010.4 and this is the version I am running now. It is from repository ttp://ppa.launchpad.net/hugin/hugin-builds/ubuntu. ( I have fetched the old debs manually from repository after I ran in to the OpenGL issue). Package reports that it is maintained by "Hugin PPA Packagers".

I will change this report to new when I have completed the requested information. Thank you for working on this.

Answer to question one.

1. I tested the version 2009.2.0.4461 (Synaptic reports 2009.2.0+dfsg+2ubuntu2) from Lucid/Universe repository. Preview worked fine with proprietary ATI drivers.

Hopefully this information answers your questions. Switching status to new now as requested.

Thank you. Yes, your test answer my question.

Most likely what you have filmed is the consequence of a bug introduced between 2010.4 and 2011.0. The bad news is that the bug is spurious / difficult to reproduce / and seems to manifest itself in different ways under different systems.

I mark this report as a duplicate of the report that has attracted most attention so far and that describe other manifestations of the bug.

Given your remarks on bug 792896 that the workaround does not work for you, I am inclined to suspect that this is not a duplicate. Will have to be investigated further, possibly after fixing 792896

Marking the bug as triaged - it would take at least one other user to confirm it, and the report is not really new / does not require developer attention so long as we can't reproduce.

I finally had a reply through Ubuntu forums.
User sbraz commented

"ati card here, hugin works.
ubuntu 10.10, fglrx 11-4, installed from repo (2010.0.0+dfsg-3ubuntu1)."

So it seems that the preview failure is not common to all ATI cards.

The same Effects here with proprietary ATI Driver for ATI Radeon HD 4250 (see Attachment for Details) with Hugin 2011.5.0.159666a32486 from Nightly PPA under 11.10.

After uninstalling the proprietary driver, the preview Window works fine.
