package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

There seem to be issues with this package and the laptop brightness control on a Sony Vaio VGN-FW510D. I used a patch discovered on the web (can't recall the URI) which fixed that issue, but may be contributing to a post-suspend wake up. Attempting to reinstall fglrx got me this error.
