Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

amavisd failed to start because /etc/mailname does not exist. You can work around this by creating it, i.e.

    sudo hostname -fqdn > /etc/mailname

Of course, it shouldn't fail because of that. amavasd-new-2.6.5/debian/etc/conf.d/05-domain_id should be fixed to call hostname or use /etc/hostname when /etc/mailname does not exist, as postfix does.

I tried sudo <myhosts_name> -fqdn > /etc/mail (I substituted my hosts name in the angle-brackets) and got (after entering my password) [/etc/mail is my mail_directory]:

sudo <myhosts_name>: command not found

I even tried: hostname -fqdn > /etc/mailname and got:
bash: /etc/mailname: Permission denied

Trying sudo hostname -fqdn > /etc/mail got me:
bash: /etc/mail: Is a directory

What or where am I doing wrong?

I am using Ultimate Edition 3.0 Gamer as a virtual machine on VMware Workstation v7.1.5 build-491717 on Windows 7 64-bit (host OS).

Ubuntu 11.04 as I only like the classic mode and 11.10 was like a virus to use:

I can not use Synaptic Package Manger now, I reloaded from CD 11.04 October 28, 2011. Prior to this reload, a security update for flash dated April 16, 2012 would just half load and then I could not close it just froze. This all start when some Ass this forum gave me a entry for Terminal to update ClamAV as the Clam TK kept read out of date and has done so for a while. The update screwed my whole computer up. Now the reload does not even work correctly to fix this.. I f you jerks can not explain things step by step or non geek terms don't offer suggestions to help.

When I politely stated this prior about the ClamAv 0.97.4 update not working he or she just blamed it all back on me, well now I say FUCK OFF to that particular person - so I will just have to SUCK it up and BUY the new Windows 8 and say bye bye. I just hate MS but at least the jerks on that end don't blame it on the NON GEEK USER. YEs I use cut and paste for the pricks update to Clam AV

YES THE CD was scanded OK prior to installation

Hi,
Cleaning up old issues - to set a valid fqdn you can just use hostname:
"sudo hostname you.domain.com" will set the files accordingly as needed.

Then the subsequent (re)start of amavis will work.
That said setting the bug to invalid as the init script even reports directly which part of the config is missing.
