gnome3-team ppa: mutter aborts

I am trying to use gnome 3 with ubuntu, so have installed:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome3-team/gnome3/ubuntu natty main

I believe that the reason I have no joy is because:

> mutter --replace

Abort

I assumed that this may be because clutter prefers 3D hardware acceleration, and my graphics card is an Intel 865, i.e., not exactly new. However, I just tried an opensuse gnome 3 live CD, and it works (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/Medias/images/iso/GNOME_3.i686-1.3.0-Build1.3.iso)

Thoughts?

I believe mutter and GNOME Shell work fine in released versions of Ubuntu and in the current GNOME3 PPA.
