Bug Description

I get the message "This driver is activated but not currently in use" in jockey when I try to use my nvidia driver. I tried removing it and reinstalling, but after reboot it still gave me this message.

<jasoncwarner_> jaytaoko is seeing the same thing on his nvidia natty system

[The issue that is prompting installation of -nvidia is periodic screen corruption with -nouveau:]
<jasoncwarner_> what I'm seeing is this
my screen flickers, then I can't click on any window, then I get graphic
defects in the indicators and active window
what I need to do then is grab the active window and move it around the display to get it to redraw
this happens maybe once or twice a day
<jasoncwarner_> the annoying thing is it seemingly happens at random

He says he started noticing the corruption about 2 weeks ago. Looking at dpkg.log no X/kernel/compiz changes occurred during that period, but it did see a unity change.

[ 7.854] (II) NVIDIA(0): [DRI2] Setup complete

Actually, looks like from your Xorg.0.log that you do in fact have -nvidia installed, loaded, and (apparently) operational.

Is the problem pasted in #2 accurate for the underlying issue you're trying to solve? Also, we'd discussed downgrading unity, did you manage to reproduce the issue on the earlier unity version?

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu)
Changed in nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu):
assignee: nobody → Bryce Harrington (bryce)
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Confirmed

Just talked about it with Jason, and I think this is a dupe of bug 771788 and thus a jockey bug (or nvidia-common). I'll debug it on Jason's laptop next week.
