Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

On an older Samsung desktop at work (running Natty), I get occasional freezes. During the freeze, I can move the mouse pointer normally, but the system doesn't respond to mouse clicks. Also, keyboard input is ignored except for the key combos to drop to a console. The screen isn't updated; for example, the clock appears frozen, etc. These freezes almost always happen after the machine has been sitting idle for a while. It's possible that the screensaver (blank screen) aggravates the problem, but I can't prove that it does.

To recover, I have to send kill -9 to the compiz process and let it get respawned. Nicer signals (15, 1, 2) don't have any apparent effect.

Since this isn't a crash, I don't think I can get apport traces, and since I can't predict when the freeze will occur, it's difficult to get other real-time info. I don't really know what kind of additional info would be useful in this report. I'll be glad to attempt to supply any requested info, though.

I have exactly the same symptoms, except the screensaver: screen freezes while I'm actively working with documents, so the system is not idle.

Additionally audio is working perfectly (it still plays music, etc).

Specs:

Linux enexy-laptop 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:50 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Ubuntu 10.10, 10.04 worked like a charm on the same hardware.

I get the same error. Sometimes 3 times per hours. To me it seams to be affected by keypresses, as it often happens while I work with VIM or while I am closing it with ":x"
While compiz freezes I can move the mouse cursor and change to the console and restart compiz with "sudo killall -9 compiz"

Linux eris 2.6.38-10-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 28 15:07:17 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
DualCoreCPU with nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8400 GS] (rev a1)
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 11.04" without Unity activated

It worked all fine in Ububtu 10.04.

Any hint where/how to search would be helpful

Scott Severance, it will be helpful in any case to attach the apport information so that the characteristics of your system get registered for this bug report.

You can do that by entering in a terminal:

apport-collect 800222

Just a note: You might find Unity 2D stuff in the logs. I've been running 2D as a workaround, but the problem occurs whether or not 2D is installed. (Of course, if 2D is running, it can't occur, since Compiz isn't running in such a case.)

I get these crashes as well. The screen freezes when I wake up from the screensaver (both OpenGL and X screensavers) and the picture freezes on the screensaver. I.e. the screen shows the picture from the screensaver. The mouse pointer changes over relevant areas of the screen. Sound keeps playing.

I don't know how recent the latest compiz updates are, but I'm guessing they've been out for a while since I don't recall seeing them. The machine I originally reported the bug about experiences these crashes less frequently under Oneiric than Natty. It hasn't crashed in a while, but considering the crash pattern lately, that doesn't mean much.

However, just a few days ago, my friend's machine exhibited the same symptoms. Her machine is running Oneiric, and I've configured it to automatically install security updates. I don't know, however, how diligent she is about installing the other updates that can't be set to auto-install.

I'm *very* rarely getting a subset of this problem, where mouse clicks don't register. I use focus-follows-mouse, and when this happens, focus does not follow the mouse any longer.

However, the keyboard works just fine. When I switch workspaces with the keyboard, the window that is under the mouse on the new workspace *does* get focus - it's just that moving the mouse around does not change focus. It seems as if something happens with the mouse position when workspaces are switched that doesn't happen otherwise or vice versa.
