I tried to move the data directory but it failed so I have removed it (mysql server) then tried to re-install it again.

Azizur, can you include /var/log/mysql/error.log ? I believe this will give us a clue as to why mysql did not start.

Sorry Clint,

It was on an a VM so that I just zapped it into trash and got a new VM.

Rather than moving data directory I just mounted my new directory on the default directory and it seems to be working.
