Bug Description

Hi,

I made an upgrade successfully from 8.10 to 9.04. Now I am trying to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 but update manager propose 10.4 instead of 9.10.

Specifically, sudo do-release-upgrade fails:

"Checking for a new ubuntu release
Done Upgrade tool signature
Done Upgrade tool
Done downloading
extracting 'lucid.tar.gz'
authenticate 'lucid.tar.gz' against 'lucid.tar.gz.gpg'
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names

Reading cache

Checking package manager

Can not upgrade

An upgrade from 'jaunty' to 'lucid' is not supported with this tool."

How can I fix it?

Regards!

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. I have the same problem as the original poster- I don't think it's a support issue but a bug in do-release-upgrade. The idea of do-release-upgrade is to handle the upgrade process for the user.. in this case, 9.04 cannot be upgraded directly to 10.04, so do-release-upgrade shouldn't be trying to do that.

I would welcome a support answer as well or instead- but the upgrade process as described by official documentation fails, which seems like a bug.

I agree with johnnynyquist, since I followed the official documentations as well and the mentioned distribution appears.

It seems to be a bug.

Hello
Running in a terminal
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
what happens ?
If not working, in terminal
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and substitute all the jaunty written with karmic, be carefull.
save and run update manager.

Thanks, that worked, except I used sed instead of gedit.
Booting into karmic, do-release-upgrade worked as expected.

Thanks again!
