Unable to add and remove menu items in Unity

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and the package version of Alacarte is

I wanted to remove an application from my menu because it seemed unnecessary and I also wanted to add an application I installed by hand to the games menu but it didn't work. the application was findable by search in Unity but was not in the games menu for unity.

Hi, I originally filed this bug report and it still has not been addressed in 11.10 can somebody fix this in either 11.10 or the new 12.04

The bug could be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/340285 , because even if I remove an entry with Alacarte, the desktop file is still located at .local/share/applications
