screensaver runs twice after timeout when manually activated

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

If I manually activate the screensaver ("Lock Screen") with the Ctrl-Alt-L keyboard shortcut, the screensaver will activate AGAIN after the normal timeout (5 minutes in my case). So when I return to my computer, I enter my password, the screen is unlocked, then after a second or two the screen locks again I am prompted to enter my password again. After the second password entry, my screen is unlocked.

I have verified that this does not occur when the screensaver is allowed to activate automatically. It's only the Ctrl-Alt-L "Lock Screen" action that causes the duplicate instance.

This is not a duplicate of bug #556255. That bug is purportedly fixed. This is a new and separate issue.

Thanks for reporting this issue.

What desktop environment are you using?
Could you please do a "ps aux | grep screensaver" when you manage to have two running, and paste the result here?

Thanks.

Also, what is the result of "which gnome-screensaver-command", and does running "gnome-screensaver-commend --lock" lock your screen?

I'm using the default Natty Unity+Gnome desktop.

The ps output is the same with and without the double screensaver.

$ ps aux|grep gnome-screensaver|grep -v grep
force 2828 0.0 0.1 28248 4220 ? Ss Jun09 0:18 gnome-screensaver
force 7437 0.0 0.1 26752 3924 ? Sl Jun10 0:11 /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver --no-daemon

$ which gnome-screensaver-command
/usr/bin/gnome-screensaver-command

gnome-screensaver-command --lock DOES activate the screensaver and lock my desktop

After you restart your session, do you have two gnome-screensaver processes running?

When you do have two screensavers, what is the output of ps aux | grep dbus-daemon | grep -v grep

Hi Marc. Thanks for following up. I'll provide the information you want as soon as I can, but I need this computer for work, and I can only test the screensaver by activating it or allowing it activate, then gather the information by sshing from another computer.

I have not been able to attempt the steps that you've requested, Marc. However, this bug is trivial to reproduce. I think that anybody with an interest in fixing this bug should be able to troubleshoot it themselves.

To reproduce:

1. Set the screensaver timeout to 1 minute
2. Manually lock the desktop with Ctrl-Alt-L or by clicking Lock Screen
3. Wait 70 seconds
4. Unlock the screen with your password.
5. Try to use your desktop. The screensaver reactivates. You must enter your password again.

Thanks,
Justin
