Bug Description

While reporting bugs, typing text and by hitting enter to go to next line it logged me out several times.
I've rebooted and also tried startx, which logged me in to Gnome failsafe, stating the hardware doesn't support Gnome3.
Unity runs ok so far.

Could you please check if there is a lightdm crash file in /var/crash ? If there's a recent lighdm crash file please open a terminal and run the command:
$ sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/name_of_lighdm_crash_file

If there is none please check that apport is enabled in /etc/default/apport and start it. It should report a crash automatically next time lightmd crashes.

I'm closing this report because in both cases it will create a new report.

Thanks for the review. No lightdm crash file, but I've enabled apport and received notes about lots of other crashes.
Side note, reporting from within /var is also available by right click on crash file -> open with report a problem.

Get almost anytime logged out to tty when typing text in Firefox by hitting [Enter] or random number key. With or without wireless enabled. I've wrote down some lines which are displayed in tty. It's checking pulseaudio, battery state and others ok. Then there appear weird lines starting with user login: three or more lines with bunch of numbers, stars, pipes, percent, letters, whatever you can think of. Afterwards it messages about wireless I guess. WL_ops_bss_info_changed: qos enabled: false (implement). [578.197496] - three different such numbers - ieee80211 phy0: brcmsmac: wl_ops_bss_info_changed: disassociated
: arp filtering: enabled false, count1 (implement) and : bss idle: true (implement). Not a single lightdm crash file in /var. Only gnome-panel, gnome-power-manager, indicator-weather crashed and nm-applet needs to be restarted now every reboot with alt+f2. During this bug report it logged me out to tty at least five times although I avoided to hit the [Enter] key. Therefore apologies for missing paragraphs.

In tty those mentioned lines scroll down, the last word is password in large letters, but if I start typing it displays clear letters.
Some time later user login appears or I can hit [Enter] more times until it displays user login.
After login I can startx which logs me into failsafe GUI without complains as before. Either from there or from tty I can do a reboot.
Last time it was rebooted I didn't connect to wireless or eth0 (I need to restart nm-applet for this anyway), instead I opened a terminal to grab some errors from log files, but after a few letters typing got logged out to tty again. Very weird all.
I'd be happy to issue any cmds in tty in order to provide you with more meaningful outputs.

Reproducable by pressing [Enter] key several times.
Almost impossible to report bugs since it logs me out to tty while typing. Writing here from Natty and reproducing the steps on Oneiric.
The behaviour and output is always the same as described above.
Did dpkg-reconfigure-keyboard-configuration, exported locales, all necessary language packages installed and .dmrc says:
[Desktop]
Language=de
Layout=de
Langlist=de:en
LCMess=de_DE.UTF-8
Session=gnome

'Keyboard' in system settings doesn't allow changes or add custom shortcuts; terminal doesn't open with ctrl+alt+t.
Run xev and press [Enter] key says:
KeyRelease event, serial 36, synthetic NO, window 0x3800001,
root 0x14e, subw 0x0, time 643380, (-174,88), root:(420,395),
state 0x0, keycode 36 (keysym 0xff0d, Return), same_screen YES,
XFileterEvent returns: False

kern.log has over 97MB, try to upload syslog which has only 1,6MB.

Logout to tty still occurs with 0.4.0, while writing some text in firefox, gedit and pressing [Enter] key.
But it's still not obvious to me what exactly is the cause. I wrote some text, such as answer and bug report and it didn't log me out.
I've tried to trigger it by writing a text file in gedit, just typing letters, numbers and pressing [Enter] lots of times and after about ten lines it logged out to tty. kern.log has almost 98MB, obviously no logrotate assigned, so I rather attach syslog again.

Logout to tty again, writing some text in Firefox and pressing [Enter], number or any other key. tty is weird too, it scrolls down lines about system specs and I need to press [Enter] to get real login prompt. While typing passwd it scrolls further down, again need to press [Enter] to get login prompt. Log files have no segfault regarding lightdm. Logout times were around 2:40, 3:20, 3:40 while writing this. I've also tested with LAN cable and turned wireless off, same behaviour.

Writing in gedit now in order to test if I get logged out offline.
I've ran Memtest on Oneiric which passed. Natty doesn't log out to tty, tested with Unity wall enabled, but not with Compiz cube, since I wanted to upgrade right away.

My assumption was that Compiz with enabled cube was the culprit.
So after upgrading to Oneiric I left Unity wall and start to trigger the logout by writing with gedit and pastebin, no logout occured.***22:42 logout to tty***

Enabled Compiz cube, disabled wall and static switcher. Aside that it disrupts the sc ***22:51 logout to tty***, the screen (bug reports alread ***22:56 logout to tty*** exist), I rebooted.
Logout isn't working because lightdm doesn't appear, just a blank screen.

## Proceed writing from desktop pc, otherwise I'll never be able to finish this comment.

With enabled cube I start writing again in gedit and pastebin which logged me out to tty.
Reboot didn't bring back a working desktop, so I've managed from tty to remove config files, reset gconf and got back Unity wall. To be sure also issued dpkg-reconfigure to Unity and Compiz.

Happy about the observation that enabling cube triggered the logout I wanted to report here.
But instead, after few lines of writing it logged out to tty again, while on Launchpad or in gedit, that's what I've marked with *** above.
I'm unable to write longer text, no matter where and running out of ideas.

Now keep fingers crossed. Reinstalled and upgraded again via Natty, kept Oneiric /home and only formatted /. Didn't touch CCSM and run Unity wall as is (except it kept customized opacity and workspaces, 6 instead 4).
Since a few hours now writing text files and on Launchpad - *no logout to tty*.

Bug #801609 sounds a little familiar, except it's Natty, Kubuntu and nvidia, but maybe there is something else in common.

I've started right here now typing fast and got logged out to tty:
Jun 25 18:35:31 kernel: [ 4396.419619] init: tty1 main process ended, respawning
Jun 25 18:35:34 kernel: [ 4399.934473] init: tty1 main process ended, respawning
Jun 25 18:35:37 gnome-session[1375]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Die Ressource ist zur Zeit nicht verfügbar) on X server :0.#012
## content in brackets says: ressource currently not available.

After reboot start typing again here about 20 lines, no logout, yet. It seems pc has to run a while until typing triggers a logout. Monitoring temperatures with conky doesn't display any high cpu, mem or temperature, all is green. Oneiric is updated.

No, it has nothing to do with a longer uptime. After commenting here, opened gedit, started typing random lines and got logged out 19:04. Lots of tty respawning lines.
Beside, when I opened syslog with nano on tty I've found out that it displays the wrong time in between.
e.g.
Jun 25 17:23:07 NetworkManager[971]: <info> (wlan0): deactivating device (reason: 0).
Jun 25 15:23:13 rtkit-daemon[1473]: Successfully called chroot.

Jun 25 18:40:52 NetworkManager[853]: <info> (wlan0): deactivating device (reason: 0).
Jun 25 16:40:53 rtkit-daemon[1426]: Successfully called chroot.

Jun 25 19:41:00 NetworkManager[812]: <info> (wlan0): deactivating device (reason: 0).
Jun 25 17:41:01 rtkit-daemon[1363]: Successfully called chroot.

Just now while writing syslog displays:
Jun 25 19:19:24 kernel: [ 449.226988] init: tty1 main process ended, respawning

Typing about 10 lines now and monitoring syslog, result:
Jun 25 19:33:53 kernel: [ 1318.894725] init: tty1 main process ended, respawning
Jun 25 19:33:55 kernel: [ 1320.530520] init: tty1 main process ended, respawning
Jun 25 19:38:18 gnome-session[1332]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Die Ressource ist zur Zeit nicht verfügbar) on X server :0.#012

Result, logout can be very easily reproduced by just watching syslog in sys log viewer and typing randomly on the keyboard. It logs out to tty even without the message tty respawning.
Jun 25 19:44:45 ntpdate[1705]: adjust time server 91.189.94.4 offset 0.100605 sec

Jul 5 00:27:48 gnome-session[1313]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11

Typing slowly and carefully also respawns but doesn't logout. It certainly can be reproduced by writing fast, no matter if off- or online, hence I wouldn't declare it as random any longer.

After recent updates, rebooted and typed fast about 60 random lines with gedit, no logout, no tty respawn messages in syslog. Also tested after resume from hibernation in case that's relevant.
But since former positive experience now rather sceptical will test again tomorrow after restart and report back.

Before retrieving todays updates I'd like to share good news. Writing lots of text in gedit and online - no logout to lightdm yet, no respawn messages. I deeply respect and appreciate your work on this issue, many thanks. I'd love to learn about the reason, e.g. something in log files which I've missed to interpret smartly, but it wasn't probably that trivial.
