I've tried to install Skype through software center, but the installation is frozen on the "applying changes" step

Thanks for the report. Unfortunately, there isn't enough information here for us to tell what the problem is.

If you still experience the problem, could you please trigger it once, and then attach these files:
/var/log/dpkg.log
/var/log/apthistory.log
/var/log/syslog
