Bug Description

This is fresh Natty install with previos home partition. Root and home partitions are on SSD. I have nVidia card.

After GDM is started it tries to log me in automatically as it is set to. However it never reaches the desktop. All I get is Ubuntu wallpaper and mouse cursor. By pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete I get back into GDM. The only session I can succesfully log into is the recovery console.

I tried installing Unity-2D from PPA, after I logged into this session the unity panels appeared for a while but they were blinking rapidly only to disappear completelly after I tried eg. launch an application.

I installed nvidia-current.

I tried temporarily removing ~/.config folder but nothing changed.

I tried installing Xubuntu-desktop but the system would not deliver anything but wallpaper either so I removed xubuntu* and xfce*

Finally installing Kubuntu-desktop I can log into Kubuntu session I am in now in. However I cannot launch Firefox, Chromium, Nautilus so I guess the problem is GTK or Gnome related.

Please ask for any additional files I can provide.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. While we appreciate the difficulties you are facing, it would appear that the CD image (ISO file) you downloaded could be corrupt. There is an easy way to verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you download. Could you please visit https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM follow the instructions and report back as to whether or not the MD5SUM verified? Thanks in advance.

I used the command in the CD I installed from and all the files are correct

md5sum -c md5sum.txt | grep -vi 'OK$'

I'm having a similar problem in Trusty, but Gnome has been saving me for now as it's the only option that works at login. After logging into Unity all I get is the wallpaper and cursor.

It started while running 14.10 and the machine simply shut down while I was on Steam. I've searched a bit and other people with the same issue said it came up after upgrading from 14.04 to 14.10. I had updated for a while with no issues. They've mentioned something related to plymouth and graphics.

By now I've reinstalled Ubuntu a few times with no luck.

Yesterday I tried logging into Gnome just to check and it worked. I could also log into the guest session.

Today, it seems the problem is solved. The only trick that worked for me was installing unity-tweak and running 'unity-tweak-tool --reset unity'. It has to be run from an X session, as from the tty it didn't work.
