Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-generic

I've been wanting to ask for a long time but I very rarely use my optical
drive, so I haven't gotten around to it before I had to install on a "new"
box.
Since Maverick I've experienced that I can't eject my optical drive by pushing
the physical buttons, I have to use the 'eject' command. At first I thought it
had to do with faulty hw but now it's happening on another box too.
When I boot up in Windows XP (it came with the second hand box ;) it works OK
but as soon as I boot into Linux it doesn't; even at the grub menu.
dmesg has a lot of these entries in it:

[81078.265582] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 16
[81078.265586] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 17

[81078.273279] sr 3:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK

[81078.273309] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 68
[81078.273312] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 17

It makes no difference if there's a medium in the drive or not.
The drive otherwise works just fine both for audio and data CD's.

I'm not quite sure which package this belongs to so I filed it under 'linux-image-generic' as it seems to be on kernel level.

Thomas "Tanghus" Olsen, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
