after installing ubuntu 10.10 on a flash drive with 3.2 GB space for user modifications(casper) i did this:
terminal: sudo apt-get update
went into synaptics and updated all of the marked packages to their last version.
this is when i got the error and now software center will not work anymore.
i can reproduce this error.

Please execute the following command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again as this may resolve your issue. We plan to make lzma errors more informative and that work is being tracked in bug 691985 which I will mark this a duplicate of.
