Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

When connecting an external monitor the panel appears at the top of the external monitor, but the desktop area is completely black. In addition, there is a black strip at the top of my primary screen. As I mouse over the launcher on the left the tool tips appear and never go away and some of the icons are "scrambled". Will attach a screenshot that will likely demonstrate the conditions.

I tried using the Ubuntu, Ubuntu Classic, Ubuntu Classic (No effects) and Unity 2D sessions and only the Ubuntu session exhibited this behaviour. Dual monitors worked fine in all the other sessions, so afaict this is not a problem specific to xorg, the Intel drivers or compiz (though I can't conclude it doesn't involve those components).

Please let me know what other information would be useful.

I have exactly the same problem on a Dell e6410 laptop using a brand new 11.04 Install and all updates.
100% consistent.

If I logon using Ubuntu Classic all works fine.
