Could not initialise the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package information.

Please report this bug for the 'update-manager' package and try to include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/tw.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

I am getting the same error message when trying to run the update manager package.

I am getting a similar error and the update manager asks me to report. It has the following contents :

'E:Problem parsing dependency Depends, E:Error occurred while processing libwncksync-dev (NewVersion2), E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/uk.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

Recently i have been having a lot of problems with my graphics on my ubuntu 10.10, + pains getting Nvidia Geforce drivers to work

fixed it. I did

sudo rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin

then

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

as explained here:

then it got fixed.

Thanks. I had a similar but not identical error report as per my attached "Packet Manager.png" and the above procedure happily fixed it.
