Bug Description

The message indicator only works if Thunderbird is open or minimized. An option to allow closing or minimizing Thunderbird to the Messaging Menu would allow the messaging menu to run in the background and only alert the user when new messages are received. I realize this is more of a feature request than a bug report, but it seems to be the logical function of the messaging menu, even if it hasn't been implemented yet in any other email client.

It has been implemented by gm-notify and postler. And yes, that's the expected behavior.

Other applications achieve this just by unmapping their top-level window, which is pretty hacky (for one thing, the hidden top-level window continues to use all the resources that it would normally do if it were on the screen). It would be nice if Thunderbird supported a "headless" mode where all services would keep running without any top-level windows at all. That would probably be the correct way to solve this, other than splitting the backend entirely from the UI

Why can't Thunderbird behave as Gmail Watcher in the Messaging menu? It should also auto-start.

Changed in messagingmenu-extension:
status: New → Confirmed
