package bcmwl-kernel-source 5.100.82.38 bdcom-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 3

Jockey fails to install Broadcom's STA driver with the log below, and when I attempt to follow instructions to remove and re-add bcmwl-kernel-source, I find that the removal script is also broken, as shown below that.

This is out-of-the-box Ubuntu Natty on a blank hard drive, and very bad behaviour.

Worth noting that I've just completed the automated upgrade of many packages, so apt may report newer versions than those which generate this buggy behaviour.

I'll try again after a restart.
