*NEW* Ubuntu 11.04 MSNBC Videos Stopped Working

Binary package hint: adobe-flashplugin

As of May 31, 2011 MSNBC video content stopped working on Ubuntu 11.04 with Google Chrome (latest release). This problem does *not* exist in Ubuntu 10.04. Instead of the video the user get a blank white window. The bug can be replicated on X86_64, i386, and ARM Ubuntu 11.04 platforms running the Unity shell.

Does the video keeps loading forever? Or does the flash app doesn't even load?

Additionally can you post the
uname -a
dpkg-query -W chrome*
(assuming chrome rather than chromium) output for both your systems and indicate what
the contents of
about:plugins
in Chrome says for just flash plugin?

Using Chrome 12.0.742.91 and Flash 10.3.181.22 on Kubuntu 11.04 kernel 2.6.38-10-generic x86_64, I cannot reproduce this bug.

I was once unable to load a video after having moved to a new video, but I could not repeat this, so it could as easily have been a network issue.

Could you give a page on which this bug is repeatable?

*Any* of the video links on msnbc.com which use a pop-up window will
reproduce this problem when using Google Chrome 11.0.696.77 and Ubuntu
Natty 11.04 with Unity.,

I'm sorry, I didn't make my instructions clear enough (and there were some errors). For each machine/setup (there are three?) in question can you do the following and post the output here:

uname -a
dpkg-query -W \*chrome\*
dpkg-query -W \*flash\*

Again for each system (indicating which is which), if you go to about:plugins in Chrome can you post what the output for the Flash plugin is please?

Can you also report whether the problem occurs with Firefox? Again can you indicate the result of about:plugins (in Firefox's location bar) for the Flash plugin on each of the systems and whether the video works on each of the systems.

Can you also post the output of
ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
?

Between May 31, when I reported that this bug had started, and Thursday, June 9, the bug could be demonstrated on all three of my Ubuntu 11.04 machines: the x86_64 desktop, the i386 laptop, and the Acer N450 ARM netbook. As of today all MSNBC videos are again working. Between the period that I reported the bug on 6/03/2011 and yesterday there ave been approximately 50 packages updated by the Ubuntu updater, to include Google's Chrome browser (from V11 to V12) and the Adobe flashplayer.

Due to the length of time it took to get the Ubuntu developers to become interested in this bug, we will now probably never know why it was occurring.

But at least the problem has been fixed. I just wish I knew what caused it in the first place.
