Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Hello,

Occasionally the Xserver restarts itself immediately after login. I have a Thinkpad T420 with Nvidia Optimus, which I disabled in BIOS. Only the integrated Intel i2 processor graphics controller is used.

Now the exact symptom: I boot the fresh installed Natty (encrypted rootfs, installed from alternative CD), and GDM starts. Then I login, the unity desktop is started, and at that time the Xserver often simply restarts, and GDM login screen is displayed again. Sometimes the Xserver restart is triggered by a initial action, like starting an application.

This happens fairly often, and to make it even worse, most of the time it happens several times in a row: boot - login - Xserver restart - login - Xserver restart - login - and so on. After something like three to seven login attempts, the system suddenly works, and no Xserver restart happens any more.

If the first application was started by me after a login, and the Xserver didn't restart at that time, then it doesn't happen any more. In other words, this only happens at the very beginning of a login session.

This bug is not related to suspend and/or hybernate issues, as it only happens after fresh boot.

Greetings,
 jonas

Hey again,

The Xserver restart just happened again. A quick look into /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old revealed that the Xserver restart has a segmentation fault as reason.

I attach Xorg.0.log, Xorg.0.log.old, .xsession-errors and .xsession-errors.old for further details.

Greetings,
 jonas
