cannot set default mail reader to alpine or anything else

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

when choosing default applications from menu in clean 11.04 install, I get no choices other than evolution!
Even if, e.g. alpine, is installed.
So I want to specify a custom script/program, but it won't let me.

I have mutt and evolution installed, but only evolution is shown in the box.
